Restoration of Education
Everyone in the city of Gary is aware of our school system’s condition. Except for a few, we all know and believe that we must make some changes with our school boars if there is to be reform and revitalization. Below, I’ve listed some “wills and won’ts” ; effective on Day 1.
I Will I Won’t
always put children first, keep secrets from stakeholders,
keep politics out of school tell lies and half-truths to get elected
board decisions elected,
call for a forensic audit, make “political moves”,
end contract connections jeopardize our children’s
end credit card misuse successes and achievements for
end insurance perks, personal gain,
spend taxpayer dollars promise one thing, only to do
wisely, something different,
write strict ethics rules, feel entitled to receive “extras”
write strict ethics rules,
and convictions
Passion
Educating the city’s young people must always be the #1 priority. I strongly believe that the whole child, mind, body and soul, regardless of age, needs nurturing; especially in an urban setting. I contend that our children have not been given the benefit of the many models, programs and curriculums that have been developed and proved for our current situation. Children must experience success and competence to build self-esteem. A positive sense of self and accomplishment will result in achievement.
Budget cuts are an absolute necessity for financial viability. The current student population does not justify keeping so many buildings open. Several buildings are in poor condition and should have been closed years ago. The decision to have these facilities remain open have not been in the best interest of stakeholders; students and taxpayers.
In the resent past and now present, budget cuts have always been made from the “bottom”. Students, faculty and staff are always put into jeopardy. This should never be the case.

| The last 16 years of teaching in the Gary Public School System was spent at Ivanhoe Elementary. The activities, workshops, committees and classes during that time are many. The majority of what was done was for the children. Nurturing successful competent, academically sound, empowered youngsters has always been my primary focus. After that, empowering and assisting peers, parents and myself was very important part of the overall plan. | |
